Horde Defenders aiming: towers and high ground

Apply the developer-stated aiming and elevation rules, and use a dated 1.1 tutorial warning to troubleshoot a Sentry target placed off the path.

Quick answer

The developer says Horde Defenders towers never choose targets for you: they fire where you aim. It also says high ground gives guns more range and damage. If your 1.1 tutorial warns that a Sentry's target is off the path, a September 28 player recording shows the target moved to the white dot on the lane before battle. Use your current screen's controls; this does not prove every missed shot has the same cause.

The central rule: you choose the target

The official game description says every tower fires where the player aims. It explicitly contrasts a well-aimed howitzer that shreds a column at a chokepoint with badly aimed fire that lets enemies pass. This changes the job of a tower-defense player: placement creates an opportunity, but attention and aim decide which visible threat receives fire. The description does not document mouse, touch, controller, or hero-control buttons.

A practical aiming loop

  1. Look for the enemy group nearest the outpost or the group entering a narrow lane. These are sensible attention priorities from the game’s outpost and chokepoint description, not a measured target ranking.
  2. Aim where the tower can hit that group and watch the visible shots. Do not assume a tower will change targets by itself when a new bug appears.
  3. When the danger shifts to another lane, check whether your current screen lets you move or reset the tower's target during battle. If it does, redirect it and watch the result; if it does not, adjust the target before the next wave. The public description does not document when retargeting is available.
  4. If a gun can be placed on legal high ground, compare the elevated sight line against a lower position that covers the route. The developer claims both range and damage increase on high ground, but other placement tradeoffs still matter.

If the 1.1 tutorial says the Sentry is aimed off the path

A player video uploaded September 28 shows an opening LEVEL 1.1 tutorial at 00:25–00:38: after a Sentry is placed, the prompt flags its target outside the enemy path and directs the PC player to drag the marker to a white dot on that path. A later prompt says the sentries are ready. This is a visible historical tutorial correction, not a diagnosis for every tower or the current Alpha build.

  1. First read the warning on your own screen. Only apply this example when the tutorial identifies an off-path target marker.
  2. Move the visible target onto the marked lane using the control shown by your current device. The old PC prompt also offered right-click removal and replacement, but it does not establish a mobile or controller input.
  3. Check that the tutorial advances and that shots cover the lane when battle starts. If it still fails, this video does not establish the cause; avoid inferring range, line-of-sight or a broken tower without a separate check.

What high ground does—and does not—tell you
QuestionPublic evidencePractical limit
Does height matter?Official description says gun range and damage increase. No published number or universal best location.
Does it replace aiming?Official description says towers fire where you aim.No evidence that elevation enables automatic target selection.
Can every tower use it?The claim refers to “your guns.”Barriers, wire and other non-gun towers need separate checking.

This is a strategy interpretation of the developer’s two public rules. It does not claim an exact projectile path, reticle tolerance, bonus percentage, or optimal build. If you need to compare damage numerically, hold the tower, upgrade state, enemy type and aim point as constant as your game allows; a single dramatic wave is not a reliable measurement.

Version and controls

The developer's public description was rechecked on September 30, 2026. The tutorial example comes from a September 28 upload made before a later official update; its recording time and client build are unknown. These sources establish the stated aim/high-ground rules and one dated target-marker warning, not current device keybinds, a damage multiplier or an exact placement.

Common questions

Do towers auto-target in Horde Defenders?

The developer says no: towers fire where the player aims.

Is high ground always the best placement?

The developer confirms a range and damage benefit for guns, but does not compare it with lane coverage or publish a universal placement rule.

What is the high-ground damage multiplier?

No percentage or multiplier is published in the official description. Do not rely on an uncited number.

My 1.1 Sentry target is outside the path. What should I check?

In a September 28 tutorial recording, the player was prompted to move the target marker onto a white dot on the lane; the tutorial then said the Sentries were ready. Follow the prompt and controls in your current session. This is one possible tutorial correction, not a universal explanation for missed shots.
